Valentine’s Day Movies
Last year I was wanting to watch a good rom-com but I wanted something that I hadn’t seen before so I searched google and blogs for suggestions, I felt like the various lists and recommendations were repetitive. I knew I wanted to make a list for this Valentine’s Day of some movies that may be new to you! I know not all of these are obscure but I didn’t find them on traditional “suggestion” lists. I know not everyone loves Valentine’s Day but I have to say I have always enjoyed it, I love anything with a good theme. I think that I have compiled a list that has some variety that is good for watching with yourself, gal pals, family, or a date! Thank you for reading and I hope you have a lovely Valentine’s Day! If you have any favorite rom-coms that you feel like aren’t as popular please leave a comment below, I would love new recommendations too!
A Little Romance
This is a great movie about young love in the 70’s that takes place in France and Italy. The young couple run away to Venice to kiss under the Bridge of Sighs because as legend says that if a couple kisses under the bridge at sunset they will stay together forever. I am sure you will see a slight theme here, you could say I love a rom-com that involves travel.
A Good Year
Takes place in the south of France and the scenery is absolutely stunning. Russell Crowe’s character plays a London banker who inherits his uncle's vineyard in Provence and has to travel there to settle his affairs.
Decoy Bride
Takes place in Scotland and is just hilarious. A famous author wants to get married without the paparazzi and he plans a wedding on a remote island off of Scotland. A local girl ends up being a “decoy bride” as the title suggests to help throw the paparazzi off and it is just a good laugh. I am surprised this movie is never on a “suggested” list for rom-coms.
If it’s Tuesday it must be Belgium
A classic, while still a rom-com it isn’t as focused on the “rom” as others on my list. It takes place in various European cities in the late 60’s the fashion is gorgeous and will have you wanting to grab your teasing comb.
Lost in Austen
This is actually a mini-series but I couldn’t help adding it to my list. This seems to be quite controversial for die hard Jane Austen fans because a modern day girl switches places with Elizabeth Bennett and experiences Pride and Prejudice. I think it’s hilarious and if you read Jane Austen do you not picture yourself there?! I feel like it would be a dream come true but to each their own!
Mrs. Pettigrew Lives for a Day
Love this movie with Amy Adams, her character is so cute and her outfits are dreamy! It takes place in England in the 40’s and is quite the knee slapper.
A Royal Night Out
Another movie that takes place in the 40’s that follows Princess Elizabeth and Margaret after the war is over. It is a fun film following them around England and their outfits are spectacular. Also, it is quite funny and you will find yourself wanting to use old slang. My little sister and I quote “he called me baby” to each other, seriously this is an adorable movie!
Before Sunrise
I debated on putting this one on my list because I know it is mentioned here and there but I still feel like it isn’t as popular as it should be. To me it was a more grown up version of A Little Romance. If you don’t like typical rom-coms this one might be for you because it seems more realistic. It isn’t all that imposible that you could meet someone on a train and then spend one day together in Austria. I’m really not being sarcastic, I feel like this could be someone's love story.
Midnight in Paris
I also debated putting this one on my list but I wanted to have a variety of when the movies came out and while this one is well known it still isn’t a highly recommended traditional rom-com. My husband and I love this movie. Of course it takes place in Paris and Owen Wilson travels back in time to what he thinks is the best time to be in Paris which is in the 20’s and in the rain. I have to say I have dreamt of this era as well. I mean Hemingway, Fitzgerald, flappers, it really would be amazing!
Mansfield Park
I had to throw an actual Jane Austen film out there. Pride and Prejudice and Emma are quite popular but I love Mansfield Park. Fanny Price is one of my favorite Jane Austen characters and the scenery is stunning.
The Man in the Moon
A coming of age movie that has a very young Reese Witherspoon and her falling in love for the first time. My sisters and I love this movie! It makes me want to make homemade ice-cream, drink Cheerwine and listen to Elvis (my first love). I will say that even though this is a rom-com it does get heavy but if you want a good cry, well you’re welcome.
I Wanna Hold your Hand
A hilarious romp about Beatlemania where three diehard Beatle fans try to catch a glimpse of Ringo, Paul, George, and John. I love the fashion in this movie and it’s quite funny!
Gidget
I love Gidget, while I enjoy all of the Gidget movies, the first movie is my favorite. The outfits are so cute with that late 50’s beach style. I just want to pick up a surfboard and hang ten with moondoggie!
Bringing Up Baby
A classic rom-com featuring Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant annndddd a leopard. It is quite hilarious and I enjoy all of the vintage fashion! If you love classic films I think you will enjoy this one.
